Ontario's design, created by Greg Salmela, evokes the rugged beauty of the Canadian Shield with windswept pines rising from a rocky shoreline beside open water, a scene that recalls the landscapes painted by the Group of Seven and captures the northern wilderness at the heart of the province's identity. The obverse carries the dignified effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, and the coins were produced in pure nickel at the Winnipeg facility, giving them the bright, durable surfaces typical of Canadian coinage of the period. As one of the first large scale efforts to bring commemorative designs into everyday pockets, the series sparked widespread public enthusiasm and introduced many Canadians to the hobby, foreshadowing later thematic programs around the world.
