Struck in pure nickel at the Royal Canadian Mint's Winnipeg facility, this coin honours Manitoba with a design by Muriel Hope depicting Lower Fort Garry, the historic stone fur trade post on the Red River that served the Hudson's Bay Company and figured prominently in the province's early development and its path into Confederation. The scene evokes the region's heritage of river travel, trade and settlement, offering collectors a miniature landscape steeped in the story of the Canadian prairies. The obverse carries the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, accompanied by a commemorative dating format unique to this anniversary program that sets the series apart from standard Canadian quarters. Today it remains an essential component of any thematic or provincial collection, valued for its regional symbolism, its connection to a landmark national celebration, and its place among the earliest modern Canadian circulating commemoratives.
