The British Columbia reverse, created by Carla Paine, captures the province's Pacific identity with a killer whale breaching the coastal waters before a backdrop of rugged, snowcapped mountains, a scene that evokes both the marine life and the dramatic landscapes for which British Columbia is renowned. The obverse carries the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery‑Hunt, together with a distinctive double dating that marks the anniversary and sets the entire series apart from standard Canadian coinage. Struck in nickel at the Royal Canadian Mint facility in Winnipeg, the coin served as a widely encountered piece of everyday commemorative currency, introducing many Canadians to the pleasures of coin collecting as they sought to assemble complete sets of all 12 designs.
