Struck in nickel at the Royal Canadian Mint of Winnipeg, the series grew out of a national design competition that drew thousands of submissions from the public, and the September design is especially notable because it was the work of a young Canadian, Claudia Bertrand of Quebec, who was 14 at the time. Titled "Canada Through a Child's Eyes," the reverse offers a simple, heartfelt vision of unity and harmony that stands in charming contrast to the more formal historical themes elsewhere in the set, and it remains a favourite with those who value the democratic spirit of the competition. The obverse carries the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, linking this commemorative issue to the standard portraiture used during her reign. Its appeal lies in its accessibility, its distinctive youthful artistry and its place within one of the most ambitious commemorative programmes in Canadian numismatic history.
