The designs were chosen from thousands of entries submitted by members of the public in a national competition, which gave the series an unusually personal and democratic character. The March reverse, titled "The Log Drive" and designed by Marie Elaine Cusson, depicts a log driver balancing on floating timber as he guides it downstream. The scene honours the logging and river driving traditions that shaped the economies and communities of Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick, and it evokes the rugged labour and folklore of the forest industry that helped build the country. The obverse carries the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, the standard royal portrait used on Canadian coinage during this part of her reign. Struck at the Winnipeg facility in a nickel composition, the coin entered everyday commerce and became one of the most recognizable commemorative types handled by ordinary Canadians.
