The designs were selected through a nationwide public competition that drew thousands of submissions from Canadians of all backgrounds, making the series a genuinely popular expression of national heritage. The April design, titled "Our Northern Heritage," is the work of Ken Ojnak Ashevak, an Inuit artist from Cape Dorset, and renders a polar bear and an owl in the distinctive style of Inuit printmaking. It pays tribute to the Arctic and the artistic traditions of its peoples, and it stands out within the series for its bold, stylised composition. The obverse carries the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, accompanied by the month's name, a feature unique to this commemorative program. Struck in nickel at the Winnipeg facility, the coin entered everyday commerce and introduced countless Canadians to coin collecting, as families sought to assemble complete monthly sets in specially produced folders and albums.
