The designs were chosen through a national public competition that drew submissions from Canadians of all backgrounds, giving the series a grassroots character rarely seen in national coinage. The October design, titled "Tribute to the First Nations" and created by Jason Ryan Mercredi, honours the Indigenous peoples whose cultures and traditions form the foundation of Canada's heritage. The obverse carries the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, the first Canadian artist to design a royal portrait for the country's coinage. Struck in nickel at the Winnipeg facility, the coin entered everyday commerce and introduced countless Canadians to coin collecting, as families and young collectors set out to assemble all 12 monthly designs in the folders and boards produced for the series.
