In this series, each of Canada's provinces and territories received its own distinctive reverse, issued in sequence over the course of the anniversary celebrations. The program proved enormously popular with the Canadian public and is widely credited with introducing a new generation to coin collecting, foreshadowing the commemorative circulating programs that later became common worldwide. Prince Edward Island holds a special place in the set as the "Cradle of Confederation," having hosted the Charlottetown Conference that set the nation on its path to union. The reverse captures the gentle character of the island, evoking the rural and coastal scenery for which it is known. The obverse bears the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt and carries the distinctive commemorative dating that marks every coin in the anniversary series. Collectors value it both as a piece of national commemorative history and as a tribute to the province where the story of Confederation began.
