This is the 2023 BU issue with a mintage of 31,719. Smallpox was an infectious disease caused by a Variola virus (often called smallpox virus) which belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus. The last naturally occurring case was diagnosed in October 1977, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) certified the global eradication of the disease in 1980, making it the only human disease to be eradicated. Edward Jenner’s pioneering vaccination process ultimately led to the global eradication of smallpox and paved the way for many more life-saving vaccines.Issued to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Edward Jenner, this design was the eighth release in the Innovation in Science series and was available individually in Brilliant Uncirculated trade packaging (15,498 sales), and in a BU pack (12,928 sales).
