1891 Canada Victoria 1 Cent (Small date, Small leaves,…)

1891 Canada Victoria 1 Cent (Small date, Small leaves,…) : présentation (texte en anglais)

Struck in durable bronze measuring 25.4 mm across, these large coppers became the everyday small change of a rapidly expanding nation. The obverse presents a diademed left facing portrait of the Queen by Leonard Charles Wyon, framed by the legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA CANADA. The reverse places the denomination and date within a beaded circle, encircled by a continuous vine of maple leaves that served as an early and enduring emblem of Canadian identity. Collectors value the type for its rich historical associations and for the subtle die varieties found across the series, including distinct obverse portrait variations that reward close study. Pieces struck in Birmingham carry a small H mintmark beneath the date, adding another layer of interest for specialists assembling complete sets by year and mint.
