The reverse, created by renowned Canadian painter Alex Colville, depicts a bobcat (often called a lynx) in mid stride, rendered in a spare, modern style that contrasted sharply with the traditional heraldic and naturalistic imagery of earlier Canadian coins. It formed part of a cohesive set in which each denomination featured a native animal, including the rock dove, rabbit, mackerel, wolf and Canada goose, making the series a favourite among collectors who seek complete commemorative sets. The obverse carries the 2nd portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin, showing the monarch wearing a tiara. As a result, this type represents one of the final expressions of Canada's longstanding 80% silver coinage. Collectors value it both as a landmark of Canadian national identity and as a transitional piece documenting the shift away from high silver content in everyday Canadian coinage.
