1954 Canada Elizabeth II, steel 5 Cents BU
Rather than strike the coin in pure nickel, the Mint used a steel core plated first with nickel and then with chromium, which gave the coin a bright, slightly bluish lustre and made it unusually hard and resistant to wear. The obverse carries the first effigy of the young Queen, modelled by Mary Gillick. It shows her uncrowned and wearing a laurel wreath, surrounded by the legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA. The reverse keeps the beaver on a rock by George Edward Kruger Gray, a design long cherished as an emblem of Canada's fur trade heritage and national identity. The distinctive 12 sided shape, carried over from earlier wartime issues, helped users tell the coin apart from others of similar size and remains one of its most recognizable features. For collectors, this type is a tangible link between Cold War era resource policy and the opening of a new reign, bridging the austerity coinage of the previous decades and the return to pure nickel that followed. Because the steel core can rust wherever the plating is damaged, specimens with unbroken, lustrous surfaces are especially valued. Subtle differences in the Gillick portrait's detail, along with the coin's unusual metallurgy, also give specialists rich ground for close study.
