Its obverse carries the Arnold Machin portrait of the Queen wearing a tiara, in a modified rendering that reduced the bust relative to the surrounding legend. The change improved the balance of the design and the way metal flowed into the dies, which helped strike quality. The type belongs to the final stage of the heavier traditional bronze specifications, before later reforms reduced the coin's weight in response to rising metal costs, so it marks a transitional point in the evolution of Canada's smallest denomination. Collectors value it for completing portrait variety sets and for studying the differences between the Machin bust versions. It also appeals as an accessible way to explore the production work of the Winnipeg facility, and specialists pay close attention to strike sharpness, original colour and surface preservation when assembling high quality examples.
