Its reverse was selected through the Royal Canadian Mint's national "My Canada, My Inspiration" design contest, which invited Canadians to submit artwork reflecting their vision of the country. The winning design by Gary Haslam portrays a beaver, one of Canada's most enduring national emblems, rendered in a stylised manner that draws on Indigenous artistic traditions and celebrates the country's cultural heritage. The design also bears the dual commemorative dates of Confederation and its anniversary. The obverse carries the familiar effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The coin was struck at the Winnipeg facility of the Royal Canadian Mint in its multi ply nickel plated steel composition, which offers durability and security features that have become standard in modern Canadian coinage. Its public origin and national symbolism make it a meaningful and accessible piece for anyone assembling a collection of modern Canadian commemoratives.
