It is one of a small group of Canadian coins issued to commemorate the occasion. In place of the usual single date, the obverse carries a distinctive double date honouring the jubilee, paired with the effigy of the Queen by Dora de Pédery‑Hunt. The reverse retains the familiar twin maple leaves on a twig designed by George Kruger Gray, a motif that has defined the Canadian cent through several reigns. Struck at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg on copper plated steel (94% steel, 1.5% nickel and 4.5% copper plating), this magnetic version reflects the Mint's move away from traditional copper alloys toward plated steel, a cost‑saving composition that would eventually become standard for the denomination. Because the same commemorative design was also struck on a nonmagnetic planchet, collectors often pursue both compositions side by side, using a simple magnet to tell them apart. That pairing gives this type a special place in jubilee sets and in any collection tracing the late history of Canada's smallest coin.
