Rather than introducing a new reverse, the Royal Canadian Mint marked the occasion by placing a distinctive double date on the obverse, beneath the effigy of the Queen by Dora de Pédery-Hunt. The double date pairs the year of Confederation with the year of issue and sets this type apart from the regular annual series. The reverse retains the celebrated Bluenose design by Emanuel Hahn, depicting the famous Nova Scotia fishing and racing schooner under full sail, a motif that has become one of the most enduring symbols of Canadian maritime heritage and craftsmanship. Struck in nickel at the Ottawa and Winnipeg facilities of the Royal Canadian Mint, the coin forms part of a broader commemorative programme that also touched other denominations, making it an essential piece for collectors assembling a complete anniversary set. Its combination of a familiar national emblem with a one-time commemorative obverse gives it lasting appeal to specialists in modern Canadian coinage, to collectors of Elizabeth II issues and to anyone drawn to coins that capture a defining moment in Canada's national story.
