The logo identifies the coin's copper plated steel composition of 94% steel, 1.5% nickel and 4.5% copper plating. The Mint adopted this plated steel construction to reduce production costs, and its steel core makes the coin magnetic. That property gives collectors a simple way to separate it from earlier copper and zinc based issues that look nearly identical. The reverse keeps the familiar twig bearing 2 maple leaves designed by G.E. For specialists, the type is valued as a marker of modern minting technology and cost efficiency. It also invites close study of composition varieties, the presence or absence of the logo, and the subtle differences produced by the plating process. Together, these features make it an essential component of any complete collection of Canadian small cents.
