The plating was carried out in Winnipeg, and these early plated pieces carry a small "P" beneath the effigy to distinguish them from their pure nickel counterparts, a detail that makes them a distinct and recognizable variety for specialists. The obverse shows the 3rd portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Canadian sculptor Dora de Pédery-Hunt, depicting the monarch wearing a diadem and notable as the 1st effigy of the Queen on Canadian coinage designed by a Canadian. The reverse retains Emanuel Hahn's celebrated rendering of a schooner under full sail, widely associated with the famed Nova Scotia racing vessel Bluenose, an enduring emblem of the country's maritime heritage and seafaring tradition. It is a meaningful addition to any collection of modern Canadian coinage.
