Struck in bronze at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, the coin features the effigy by British sculptor Mary Gillick, which shows the Queen facing right and wearing a laurel wreath rather than a crown. This classical, youthful portrayal was widely admired for its grace and simplicity. Because the original portrait was rendered in very low relief, the Mint soon modified the effigy to improve striking quality. These subtle die differences give the series an engaging depth for specialists who study portrait details and die characteristics.
