1997 Belgium Albert II French text 1 Franc

Über 1997 Belgium Albert II French text 1 Franc (Text auf Englisch)

This 1 Franc belongs to the final generation of Belgian franc coinage issued during the reign of Albert II, who succeeded his brother Baudouin on the throne. It continued Belgium's long tradition of issuing parallel coinage in the nation's principal languages, and this variety carries its legend in French, with the country name rendered as BELGIQUE, while a companion version bears the Dutch form. The obverse presents a portrait of King Albert II by the sculptor Jan Alfons Keustermans, and the reverse features a bold denomination alongside the country name, a deliberately simple design suited to everyday commerce. Struck at the Royal Mint of Belgium in nickel plated steel, the coin reflects the economical compositions adopted for low value pieces in the late franc era. Because the franc was ultimately replaced by the euro, this type holds a special place as one of the last expressions of Belgium's national currency, and collectors value it both as a record of the transition to a new monarch and as a closing chapter in Belgian monetary history. Specialists often seek to assemble the French and Dutch legend versions side by side, pay close attention to the mint and mintmaster marks that distinguish individual strikes, and appreciate the type as an accessible yet historically meaningful addition to any collection of modern European coinage.
