1968 Canada Elizabeth II, Nickel 25 Cents

About the 1968 Canada Elizabeth II, Nickel 25 Cents

The obverse features the elegant effigy by Arnold Machin, depicting a mature Queen wearing a tiara, while the reverse retains Emanuel Hahn's celebrated caribou head, a design first introduced during the reign of George VI that has become one of the most enduring and recognizable emblems of Canadian numismatics. Because the composition is pure nickel, these coins are magnetic, a simple diagnostic that collectors use to separate them from the earlier silver issues that share the same design. Production at the Ottawa facility was later complemented by the newer Winnipeg facility, reflecting the Mint's modernisation and expanding capacity. For numismatists, this type is essential to any comprehensive Canadian collection, documenting the end of the silver era and the beginning of modern base metal coinage. Variety specialists also study it closely for subtle differences in obverse and reverse details, such as bead counts and die characteristics, offering rewarding opportunities for attribution and focused study.
